come and play

Come and play has been the constant tool in interpreting Beirut’s appropriations. This has triggered a sense of absence highlighted in the city’s playful approach as a form of survival. The final installation introduces Beirut from within the service, the city’s strongest public element, through a performative ride in the areas of Gemmayze and Mar Mikhael.
The trajectory explores a set of physical interventions and performances that are meant to trigger a different reading of our city through appropriation. Along with a set of physical installations.
this group created performances with students, friends, and a small fleet of service taxi drivers, revolving around the concept of “play as a survival kit”.

between a thought and another

This installation on Jeanne D’arc Street acts as a horizontal interactive memorial which incites pedestrians to interact with it and experience the public and private dichotomy of the street. The rotation of the installation highlights the causal and interdependent relationship between public and private as well as the past and present, expressing the inhabitants’ citations about what Jeanne D’arc street represents for them.

This project intervenes in an area that is already rich with its own unique and informal appropriations and culture. The streets of Karm el Zeitoun were chosen as a site due to their cultural significance and their unfamiliarity to outsiders.
The aim of the project was to create an interface with the user by bringing out elements of everyday life that would have been otherwise disregarded. The project focuses on the notions of the public and the private, the leftover spaces and the spontaneity of everyday life, highlighting the very thin limit between private and public, indoor and outdoor.

dare to approach
جرب أرب
dare to approach Is a statement presented by six ladders, each having a platform above, located along the Ain Mreiseh seaside. The statement comments on the large obscuring appropriations on the seaside including the banners and billboards that rise 2.52 meters along a 70-meter stretch displaying images of the politicians and the new Zeitouna Bay, ultimately crippling the once beautiful view of the sea. The public is left with no other option but to take pictures with the banners as their back drop. The ladders then confront and invite the public to climb in order to overlook the banners and enjoy the sea view, however each platform is a horizontal that cuts the vertical perspective. The platforms have small openings that accommodate only the head of the user, yet each presents a unique obstacle resulting in an obscured view and the disappointment of the user. This frustration reflects the false sense of involvement in our country, and so the installation is an ironic intervention that critiques the already existing appropriations on site.
